Hey there, fabulous folks! How’s everyone been? I’ve been pretty tied up lately, so I haven’t been chiming in as much in the comments. But I’ve been keeping tabs on all your chats and I’ve seen a bunch of you talking about the Loewe Puzzle Bag.
In fact, I got an authentic Loewe Small Puzzle Bag last year and had plans to write a review, but I wanted to really use it first before sharing my thoughts. Well, you know how it goes – there are always new bag reviews to write, and I kind of forgot about it, oops!
Now, I heard that the puzzle bag might be discontinued! Say what? What’s that all about?
About the Loewe Puzzle Bag
The Loewe Puzzle Bag first showed up on the scene in June 2014, at the men’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection event in Paris. It caused quite a buzz right away. And just a few months down the line, it became a staple of Loewe’s women’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2015.
Why Is the Loewe Puzzle So Popular?
Unique Design – What sets the Loewe Puzzle Bag apart from other high-end designer bags is its special origami-style design with separate leather pieces stitched together. You can fold it completely flat.
Versatile – Plus, you can wear it in four different ways (Shoulder, crossbody, top handle, or clutch carry), which is super versatile.
Multiple Colors – Over the years, the Loewe Puzzle Bag has come in various colors, but black, tan, beige, and green are the most commonly seen on social media.
Minimalistic Style – This unique bag stands out with its clean lines and clever design, making it incredibly recognizable. Minimalism lovers are all over it for its classy and simple vibe.
Is the Loewe Puzzle Being Discontinued?
I believe some of you may have heard or seen the news that Loewe is discontinuing the classic Puzzle bags and will only produce the Edge bags.
The facts are, while it seems like the Puzzle bag might be phased out in the future, Loewe’s website still offers both the Puzzle and Puzzle Edge bags, but they’re both labeled as “Puzzle” bags by the brand. (Stick around for a quick side-by-side comparison at the end.)
Review of My Small Loewe Puzzle Bag
I’ve had my Loewe Puzzle Sand for about a year now. In fact, I bought it preloved, but the bag’s condition was “excellent”, so when it arrived, it was almost like new, without any flaws. Now, after a year has passed, the bag still looks pretty much the same and remains in excellent condition.
- The bag is made with soft, grained calfskin leather in the color Sand.
- The shoulder strap is removable and adjustable, and you can wear it in multiple ways.
- There’s this leather zipper pull for opening and closing.
- Plus, there’s a nifty zip pocket in the back for quickly stashing small stuff, and inside, there’s a handy pocket.
What fits inside
The dimension of this Loewe Puzzle Bag Small is 9.5″W x 6.5″H x 4″D.
If you have a Gucci Soho Disco Bag, the Small Loewe Puzzle Bag is slightly larger than the Soho and has plenty of room inside.
It can easily fit a notebook and even water bottles. But for my everyday essentials, here’s what I like to carry:
- A wallet
- A cardholder
- A few makeup necessities
- A small hand sanitizer
- My sunglasses + case
- My AirPods
- My phone
- My keys
It’s pretty much the same as what I bring when I carry my Soho.
Similarly, for all those light-colored lined bags, I’d recommend tossing your makeup and stuff into little pouches. It keeps things clean and saves you from the hassle of trying to clean it up later.
PROS & CONS
Pros
- Able to wear it in multiple ways.
- The leather is built to last.
- Good for travel with because it can fold flat.
- An icon since 2015, and it doesn’t seem like its style is going anywhere soon.
Cons
- The new version of the bag is missing those studs on the base, making it less durable in a way.
- A bit tricky when it comes to getting things in and out of the bag.
Is it worth it?
Perhaps the question for me is whether it’s worth buying an authentic Loewe Puzzle bag rather than a replica.
I think it’s worth it but with a few conditions. First, this is my first Loewe bag (I didn’t have much of an opinion about the brand until I came across the Puzzle). Second, the size and color of the bag are exactly what I wanted, and I got it for a good price.
I don’t really recommend paying full price for the Puzzle because Loewe bags don’t hold their value as well as some other brands do. Although I’m not sure if the classic Puzzle’s resale value will be affected by its impending discontinuation, I don’t think it will have a significant impact.
Loewe Puzzle Edge vs Loewe Puzzle
Finally, let’s take a look at what are the differences between the Loewe Puzzle Edge and the classic Loewe Puzzle
Loewe Puzzle Edge | Loewe Puzzle |
Leather pieces overlap | Leather pieces displayed side-by-side |
Single-stitch design | Double-stitch design |
The edge looks the same color as the leather | Visible and clear black edge |
Mini Puzzle have adjustable straps | Mini Puzzle have non-adjustable straps |
I’ve noticed that many Loewe Puzzle fans aren’t thrilled about the arrival of the Edge version. On the contrary, they prefer the original Puzzle and feel that the Edge is like a completely different bag with no connection to the classic Puzzle. Some even think the Edge looks like a bad replica of the classic. Of course, there are people who like the new version, thinking that the Edge has a more modern look and feel, like an updated classic.
If you’ve been eyeing the classic Puzzle bags, this is likely the best time to grab one. Although it might take a while for the current stock of classic Puzzle bags to run out, it’s better to get your hands on one sooner rather than later.
i always thought tht brands discontinue v popular/classic bags in order 2 give them ‘classic’ and ‘coveted’ status. its about exclusivity if its vry difficult to obtain wen ppl do they feel like theyve achieved somthin. somtimes the only way 4 that 2 happen is if u cannot walk into a store & walk out with that item ofc ther r ways do this this like control supply which is wat hermes do with b’s & kellys thru lottery/wishlist systems. its about creating theideaof scarcity to generate that panic in consumers – then cue collectors/auction houses who will buy up rare bags/items 2 sell then make a profit
The handle on the edge looks a bit uncomfortable.
Not all the Edge bags have that bizarre handle, thankfully. Looks like it’d be a disaster to keep clean.
I much prefer the classic! The edge was more difficult to get my hand into the bag as the whole bag is/feels stiffer than the classic
The classic one is waayyyyy more stylish and better made.
