Most hand bag lovers are aware of the site Purse Forum where dedicated purse fans dish out about all the intricacies linked to designer handbag shopping. Now there’s also an acknowledged sense of snobbery many sense while perusing these forums where certain forum members adopt a holier-than-thou attitude simply because they own designer items. I was surprised to find that they actually mentioned that one of their Closet Confessional confessors purchases fake handbags and, as you may have guessed, this caused quite a stir on the post’s comments.

The comments ranged from acceptance of the fact that designers cannot really differentiate between superfake bags and their authentic counterparts to accusations of replica bag manufacturing being linked to terrorism (a claim that has been debunked in the past). In this article I will be comparing my replica Hermès Birkin (which I previously reviewed here) to an authentic Birkin in the same model. Slouchiness is not necessarily a sign that your bag is either fake or real!

Before I begin to go through key things to pay attention to when looking at a fake vs. real Birkin, I would like to note that you do not need to pay attention to the slouchiness of the bags. This is not a sign that will indicate whether the bag you are examining is fake or real. The bags featured both are made with Togo leather however the difference is that one bag is brand new, thus the leather is still quite stiff and so the shape of the bag is also more stiff. However as your Togo leather Birkin ages the bag naturally becomes more slouchy and this is part of the look of the Togo leather that many Hermès fans love, while some others prefer to keep the shape of the bag stiff and opt for other leathers which are better at keeping the shape! Look below at a well aged authentic Birkin in Togo leather to see how the slouchiness tends to look. If your brand new Hermès bag’s shape is really out of whack however this is a sign that your bag is most likely fake since the bag should have a clean shape when it is new!

2. Take a look at the stamping of the Hermès logo.

An authentic bag’s stamp should be clean and uniform, however on fake bags the stamp usually looks unclean – a.k.a spotty and irregular. Take a look at the stamps on both bags, as pictured below, to see which looks better/worse.

3. Take a look at the stitching.

Hermès stitching should be done on a slant – not a straight line. If you see the stitching on your bag is done in a straight manner the bag is 100% fake. This is probably the easiest thing to look at to weed out a very bad fake. Keep in mind however that if the threading is slanted, this does not mean that is 100% real, since many replica manufacturers are aware of this and stitch their bags accordingly. As you can see both bags pictured in this article feature slanted stitching.

4. Take a look at the hardware.

The font of the Hermès stamp on the hardware should be thin and elegant. If you notice a boxy or thick font the bag is definitely fake! Additionally the letters should not be too far apart on the stamping.

5. Take a look at the inside strap of the bag!

The strap’s cutout should be done nice and cleanly, and the threading should continue to be clean. Additionally you should see some numbers engraved into the inside of the strap. These refer to the production run in which the bag was produced. If there are no numbers the bag you have is definitely a fake!

6. Take a look at the leather of the bag!

The leather on a Hermès bag should be rich and feel buttery smooth – especially if it is a Togo leather bag. You can use your basic instincts when judging the leather – it should be smooth to the touch and feel luxurious – these bags are pricey for a reason after all!

As you all know I have been a handbag lover for many years (since my teens) but I have never thought about owning a Hermes bag. Why? Since this was my first purchase on this website, I was a little nervous, so I asked a lot of questions through their email. The seller answered my questions very professionally and patiently, and most notably, they sent me videos and photos showing me the process of making their bags by hand, which fascinated me. After numerous email exchanges, my worries finally dissipated.
Custom Made – They offer a personalized selection of sizes, colors, and leathers. There are four sizes that you can choose according to your daily needs. And for colors, the site says they can recreate any official Hermes color as long as their stock permits. The best part is they offer more than 10 leather options, you can even email them to request a unique and stylish bag made with exotic materials like alligator, croc, or ostrich. I always feel invested in the purchase since I get to decide how I want the product to look.
Quality(Last but NOT Least) – From the website, the company states they only produce 50 bags a month since they use Hermes’ original hand-sewn method to make the bags. It was really nice to see how much dedication they show to the process of making the bags. As for the leather, they assured me they only use imported leather from France.

HOW SIMILAR COMPARED TO AUTHENTIC BIRKIN BAGS?

I purchased my Birkin in a natural tan color with gold hardware and contrasting white stitching. Seeing my fake Hermes put me in a state of awe – I couldn’t believe how high-quality its texture was! In terms of hardware, it may not be real gold but still provides amazing precision with the anodizing. I compared it side by side with one from my friend Michelle’s authentic collection. Not even our eagle eyes could spot differences between mine and a genuine Birkin…check out these stunning pics for yourself if you don’t believe me!

I also went on the consignment site 1st Dibs and searched for a Hermes Birkin in a similar contrast stitch color and found it to be sewn with much less care than my replica. I found this shocking since the bag is going for $16,606 on their site and I paid $1400 for my Birkin 25 which is 1/10 of their price.

I often see authentication guides calling out fakes for their sketchy stitching but clearly, it seems that the authentic manufacturing standards are hell-bent on perfectly straight stitching either. IS THIS REPLICA HERMES WORTH IT?

For me, the answer is yes, I can’t tell you how I’m amazed by the quality of my fake Hermes. The leather used for my handbag feels just as luxurious and smooth as authentic Hermes leather. I am especially pleased with the stitching as I mentioned above, the handles feel strong and comfortable to carry and the zipper is also quite smooth despite all the times I have needed to open/close it.

Not only that, but because I chose the smallest size (Birkin 25), it’s lightweight but roomy enough, which means I can carry all my belongings around effortlessly no matter how far I have to go. You can feel that they have taken every aspect of quality into consideration when making my Birkin, from the stitching to the zippers and handles, to make sure it can withstand daily wear and tear.

Although it is expensive for replicas, it is definitely worth it because for those bags that are cheaper, you can quickly find out in comparison that they are made of faux leather. It’s nice to know that I have a stylish leather piece in my wardrobe that won’t break the bank.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Overall this Hermes Birkin replica was a great deal for the price and is holding up very well. The supple leather stands out and I think you are getting an excellent replica for the price being charged. It arrived in classic Hermes gift wrapping with an extra special bow, plus they used DHL shipping which was free of charge. Since every order is custom made, they took about 2 weeks to make the bag and then the shipping took about another week.

Working with this company was relatively easy – they took a deposit to kick things off, followed up with pictures of the finished product and when I approved it they promptly sent me tracking info. It was a fairly smooth transaction minus the fact that my DHL tracking number changed midway through causing some alarm on my end.
